Bolts rally twice, but fall to Schaumburg

CRESTWOOD, IL – Chad Cregar hit a ninth-inning homer to send the Windy City-Schaumburg Boomers game into extras Tuesday afternoon, but the Boomers prevailed in 12 innings 8-6 at Standard Bank Stadium.

After a 30-minute delay, Karexon Sanchez started the game with a home run for Schaumburg, to go ahead 1-0.

The Bolts would tie and take the lead in the third and fourth innings. C.J. Gillman scored on an error after a Cregar single for the first run and Jareck West singled home Bob Glover for the second.

Windy City’s lead was short-lived as the Boomers got a two-out RBI single from Drew Heithoff in the fifth. They took the lead in the sixth inning on back-to-back two-out run scoring singles from Frank Pfister and Steve McQuail.

The Bolts trailed 5-2 into the bottom of the eighth inning, when they tightened it up with two runs. With the bases loaded and two outs, Greg Bachman was hit by a pitch and Travis Weaver walked to make it 5-4. Cregar’s one-out homer in the ninth sent it to the tenth.

It was in the eleventh inning that Schaumburg initially broke the tie. Pfister and Sean Mahley each singled with the latter scoring the former for a 6-5 lead.

Windy City answered in the bottom of the eleventh, loading the bases with no outs. They were only able to get one run, though. Brandon Decker was hit by a pitch before Glover grounded into an inning-ending double play.

The game was won in the twelfth. The Boomers had the bases loaded with one out and Pfister hit a groundball to second. The Bolts were only able to get one out on the play as Mike Valadez crossed the plate with the winning run. They finished the scoring on a wild pitch.

Sam Robinson (1-0) allowed a run in an inning for the win. Andy Mee (3-1) gave up two runs, taking the loss. Tyler Ware picked up his first professional save.

The six-game home stand continues for Windy City on Wednesday night as Traverse City comes to town for three games. It is $1.00 Wednesday and Advocate South Suburban Hospital Wellness Wednesday at Standard Bank Stadium. Dustin Williams (8-3, 4.56) will get the start for the ThunderBolts against the Beach Bums’ Scott Dunn (1-2, 3.62). The ballgame begins at 7:05 and can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
