Sauer goes the distance in 3-0 win

CRESTWOOD, IL – Stephen Sauer threw the first complete game shutout of his career as the ThunderBolts defeated the Schaumburg Boomers 3-0 at Standard Bank Stadium Monday night.

The Bolts jumped on Robby Donovan early, scoring two runs in the first. Mike Torres, Chris Wade and Chad Cregar singled consecutively to score the first run. Wade was removed after hurting himself running the bases and Greg Bachman scored his first professional run in his place on Bob Glover’s RBI single.

Donovan settled down after the first, but the damage had been done. Sauer was in control from the start. He retired nine straight after the leadoff man reached on an error in the first.

The Boomers got their first two hits in the fourth, but a double play helped Sauer out of that inning. They had just two more hits the rest of the game.

Cregar padded the lead in the sixth, hitting his 19th home run of the year, one off the league lead, down the right field line. The Bolts would get two more hits that inning but would not score.

Sauer struck out eight, his second highest total of the season, and did not walk anyone in his second complete game of the year. He improves to 6-4, winning his second straight start. Donovan (6-3) pitched a complete game, striking out nine, but took the loss.

The win extends the ThunderBolts divisional lead over the Boomers to a game and a half.

The six-game homestand continues and the Windy City-Schaumburg series concludes on Tuesday morning on the final Big Splash Day this season at Standard Bank Stadium. Mike Recchia (8-2, 2.45) will get the start for the ThunderBolts against Schaumburg’s Matt Kuna (2-1, 3.55). The ballgame begins at 10:35 and can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
