Bolts split two with Normal

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts scored five early runs against the CornBelters on their way to a 5-1 win in game two of a doubleheader split at Standard Bank Stadium Monday night. In game one, a continuation of a suspended May 20 game, the Bolts fell 3-1.

Windy City already trailed 1-0 when play resumed for the first game on Monday and they quickly tied the score on a Chris Wade RBI groundout in the fifth.

It was 1-1 until the seventh, when Normal scored the winning run on a Trey Manz leadoff double followed by a Pat Dockendorf RBI single. They added another run in the eighth on Steven Felix’s RBI double to seal the score at 3-1.

Drew Provence (1-0) pitched five innings for the win. Duke Dykeman (0-2), who started the game on May 20 and the continuation on Monday, took the loss.

In game two, Chad Cregar doubled home Mike Torres in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead.

The Bolts added four runs in the third. Mike Torres singled and stole second before scoring on an error when Chris Wade tried bunting him over. After reaching on that error, Wade scored on Zach Aakhus’s two-out RBI single. Bob Glover followed with a single before T.J. McManus’s double brought them both home and made it 5-0.

Normal scored their only run in the fourth. After a walk and a double, Felix crossed the plate on a Manz groundout.

That was all the trouble that Tyson Corley ran into as he went seven innings for his first career complete game. Corley also struck out a career-high seven batters while scattering seven hits in his first victory of the year.

Corley is 1-5; Brendon Smith (0-3) started and took the loss for Normal.

The ThunderBolts and CornBelters will play a conventional nine-inning contest on Tuesday night as the series continues. Stephen Sauer (4-4, 3.80) will be on the hill for Windy City against Normal’s Tyler Lavigne (3-4, 4.61). It is Ladies Night at Standard Bank Stadium as well as a soup/cereal bowl giveaway courtesy of A.J. Smith Federal Savings Bank at Standard.
