Gateway takes game one in rout

SAUGET, IL – The Gateway Grizzlies scored ten runs between the fourth and fifth innings and defeated the Windy City ThunderBolts 14-4 at GCS Ballpark Tuesday night.

The ThunderBolts led throughout the early innings, getting on the board in the first when Bob Glover doubled and Chris Wade singled him in. They added a run in the second on Brandon Decker’s solo home run, going up 2-0.

The Grizzlies tied it in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Alex Guthrie and a run-scoring fielder’s choice off the bat of Justin Dunning.

The Bolts reclaimed the lead the following inning when C.J. Gillman doubled and scored on a Mike Torres sacrifice fly.

Again the Grizzlies tied it, but again the Bolts went back on top. Chad Cregar’s twelfth home run of the season gave the Bolts a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth, but that would be the last advantage they held as the Grizzlies offense came alive in the bottom of the fourth.

With two outs and a man on second, Jerod Yakubik and Rogelio Noris each picked up RBI singles and John Shelby’s two-run homer made it 7-4 Gateway.

They added six more runs in the fifth, again all with two outs. Yakubik, Shelby and Antone DeJesus all had RBI hits in the six-run rally that put the game away. The Grizzlies added one more run in the sixth when Jonathan Johnson hit a solo homer to make the score 14-4.

Paul Tremlin (3-0) allowed four runs in five innings for Gateway to take the win in his first start. Stephen Sauer (4-3) gave up seven runs in 3.2 innings, taking the loss.

The ThunderBolts series with the Gateway Grizzlies will continue at GCS Ballpark Wednesday night. Game two will feature Dustin Williams (6-2, 4.45) pitching for the Bolts against Gateway’s Alex Kaminsky (5-2, 5.11). The game begins at 7:05 p.m. CDT and the broadcast can be heard on sportsjuice.com.
