Bolts lose heartbreaker to Rascals

O’FALLON, MO – Danny Sawyer came up with three hits for River City including the game-winner in the ninth as the Rascals came from behind to defeat the ThunderBolts 11-10 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark Tuesday night.
The Rascals got off to a great start, scoring four runs in the first inning with the big hit coming off the bat of Sawyer, who came up with a two-run single.
The lead did not last long, though as the Bolts offense came to play. Devin Shepherd led off the top of the second with a double. Zach Aakhus and Chris Wade followed that up with back-to-back singles and Lee Rubin’s double scored both of them to make it a one-run game.
Windy City tied it in the third when Wade’s fielder’s choice scored Nick Kuroczko, who had singled. Their first lead came in the fifth inning when Kuroczko led off with a double, eventually crossing the plate on a Shepherd sacrifice fly.
After Rubin scored on a wild pitch in the sixth, the Bolts broke the game open with three big insurance runs in the eighth. With two outs, Mike Coladonato walked three men in a row in front of Mike Torres, who doubled home all three run to make it 9-4 ThunderBolts.
After allowing four runs on five hits in the first, Matt Jernstad did not give up another run on just three hits the rest of the way as he pitched seven innings. But the bullpen did not have a shutdown performance in them. Alex Thieroff loaded the bases with two walks before Greg Johnson came in and got a strikeout. The next three men, though, got hits in succession before Johnson departed with runners at the corners and one out in a tie game. Matt Costello entered and the first batter he faced, Jason Patton, singled home the go-ahead run before Costello got the final two outs.
In the ninth, Zach Aakhus was hit by a pitch and stood at second with one out as Nick Mahin delivered a single to left, tying the game.
In the bottom of the ninth, though, Chad Maddox led off with a single and was bunted to second before Sawyer’s third hit and fifth RBI was the final dagger in an 11-10 Rascals victory.
Costello took the loss (3-5) and despite blowing the save, Derrick Miramontes earned the win (7-0).
Game two at River City takes place at T.R. Hughes Ballpark Wednesday night at 7:05. Dustin Williams (8-4) gets the start for the ThunderBolts against Wayde Kitchens (1-0). The game can be heard on Sportsjuice.com.
