Bolts shut down again in 2-1 loss

CRESTWOOD, IL – Chris Nyman threw 6.2 shutout innings and for the second straight night, the ThunderBolts struggled to come up with a big hit as they fell to Nyman’s Rockford RiverHawks 2-1 at Standard Bank Stadium Saturday night.
The RiverHawks scored early after David Cooper drew a one-out walk in the first and advanced to third on a Nick Mahin error on a pickoff attempt. Jake Eigsti knocked Cooper in on a sacrifice fly.
The score remained 1-0 until the fifth. Bryant Cotton pitched well for the Bolts but ran into trouble when Carlos Dominguez led off the inning with a single and was bunted up to second. Freddy Parejo’s second of three hits in the game scored Dominguez to give Rockford a two-run lead.
Nyman, meanwhile, did not allow a hit between the first and sixth innings. Finally, though, Windy City mounted a threat when they loaded the bases in the sixth, but they could not score and still trailed by two into the eighth.
Prior to that inning, the ThunderBolts had gone 0-22 with runners in scoring position since the beginning of Friday’s game. But after Chase Porch walked and Mike Torres bunted him to second, Devin Shepherd came up with the single that tightened the RiverHawk lead to 2-1.
The Bolts could not get anything more though as they left Shepherd on first and could only muster a single in the ninth, falling by a 2-1 final.
Nyman picked up the win (1-1) while Cotton, who only allowed one earned run over 6.1 innings, was the tough-luck loser (5-6). Brett Durand pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the save.
The ThunderBolts and RiverHawks will continue their three-game series Sunday night at Standard Bank Stadium. It is Standard Bank Family Night, so four tickets, four hot dogs and four sodas can be purchased for just $40. On the field, Nick Gaudi (0-0) will get the start for Windy City against Rockford’s Brett Scarpetta (5-3). The 6:05 game can be heard on WXAV 88.3 fm and WXAV.com.
