Bolts win in ninth again

Rubin
ROCKFORD, IL – Lee Rubin scored Chris Wade on a ninth-inning single and the ThunderBolts defeated the Rockford RiverHawks 4-3 at Road Ranger Stadium Monday night. It was the second consecutive one-run win for the Bolts.
Dustin Williams started for Windy City and was brilliant early, allowing just one hit through three innings, but he fell behind Jake Eigsti with one out in the fourth and Eigsti took a 3-1 pitch out over the left field fence to give the RiverHawks a 1-0 lead.
The ThunderBolts had been down this path before, though. They had seen their opponent score first in the past three games but won all of those, and Monday, they made their charge in the sixth inning.
Rockford starter Chris Nyman had been pitching strong but he did not get the support of his defense in the sixth as Chase Porch led off by reaching on an Eigsti error. He moved to third with two outs when Mike Torres walked and Chris Wade came up with a two-run double, giving the Bolts their first lead. Nick Kuroczko then popped up to right field and Jason James could not handle it. The error allowed Wade to score.
The Rockford offense was not done as they scored a run in the seventh on a James double and Matt Greener RBI single, but Williams did not allow anything else after the RiverHawks had runners on second and third with one out.
With two outs in the eighth, they began another rally. They got a walk and a single and put runners on second and third. Williams tried a pickoff throw at third but threw it away and David Cooper was able to score. Williams departed and Greg Johnson got the final out.
In the ninth, Wade led off with a walk and after Kuroczko moved him up to second, Lee Rubin came up with an RBI single to give the ThunderBolts the 4-3 lead and, after Wes Alsup threw a shutout ninth, their sixth straight win.
Williams struck out ten over 7.2 innings but Johnson got the win (4-1). Corey Frerichs took the loss (0-1). It was Alsup’s sixth save.
Windy City looks for the sweep on Tuesday afternoon in Rockford. Bryant Cotton (5-4) will take the mound against Brett Scarpetta (4-3). The game will be played at 12:05 for a River Hawks splash day and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
