Five-run fifth catapults Bolts to victory

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts wrapped up their third series sweep of the season and their first four-game winning streak with an 8-3 triumph over the Traverse City Beach Bums Saturday night. The win concluded a 4-2 homestand.
For the second straight night, Windy City fell behind early. Nick Gaudi, starting his first game for the Bolts, walked the leadoff hitter in the second before Jeff Flagg nailed his fifth homer of the year to make it 2-0 Beach Bums.
The ThunderBolts answered quickly with a run in the bottom of the second. Zach Aakhus led off with a single and scored on a Lee Rubin groundout.
Another Rubin groundout tied the game in the fourth. This time, he drove in Mike Torres who had singled and stolen a base.
The Bolts offense broke out in the fifth, sending ten batters to the plate and scoring five times. The rally started with a Brandon Anderson single. He scored on a Billy Nowlin’s base hit. After Devin Shepherd reached on an error, Aakhus singled in Nowlin and Chris Wade’s double plated Nowlin and Aakhus. Windy City got their final run of the inning on a Chase Porch sacrifice fly that scored Torres, who had walked.
The Beach Bums got one more in the sixth on a Flagg sacrifice fly, but the Bolts made the lead five again on a Wade sac fly the next inning, and the game ended that way, 8-3. Aakhus had three hits and scored three runs in the game and Torres had two hits and two runs.
After Gaudi allowed two runs in four innings, Mike Scudero pitched the next two to earn the first win of his professional career (1-0) and Nolan Shaffer took the loss (5-3).
Windy City follows their successful homestand up with a short three-game trip to Rockford, beginning Sunday evening with a 4:05 game. Matt Jernstad (3-6) gets the start for the ThunderBolts against the RiverHawks’ Alex Szymanski. The game broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
