Bolts drop afternoon affair to Lake Erie

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts fell in an early hole and couldn’t climb out Monday morning in a 10-5 loss to the Lake Erie Crushers at Standard Bank Stadium.
The Crushers jumped in front in the first inning when Matt Jernstad walked three hitters and allowed Patrick Norris to score on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the first, Windy City tied it up. Mike Torres and Zach Aakhus each singled and Devin Shepherd’s base hit scored Torres. Chad Cregar walked to load the bases with one out, but Chris Wade grounded into a double play to end the threat.
The Crushers scored three runs the next inning and did not look back. After Norris knocked in two runs on a single and Andrew Davis picked up an RBI hit, Matt Jernstad departed just an inning and two thirds into the game, the shortest start of his Frontier League career.
Brandon Anderson singled in the third and was brought home on an Aakhus groundout, but the Crushers put the game away in the fourth.
With a man on first and one out, Jodem Rivera sent a flyball to center field. Anderson appeared to make the catch, but he dropped it while switching to his throwing hand and umpire Bruce Doane ruled that Anderson had not possessed the ball, making it an error. It kept the inning going after a Davis sacrifice fly and the Crushers scored four unearned runs in the inning total, giving them an 8-2 lead.
Windy City did not go away quickly. They got two more runs in the fourth on a Nick Kuroczko sacrifice fly and an Anderson single, but went quietly after that.
Both bullpens were called upon early, and the Lake Erie relievers did a yeoman’s job. Paul Daniels and Kelyn Schellenberg combined to pitch five innings and allowed just one run, a ninth inning tally on a Torres single.
Lake Erie sealed their victory with solo runs in the seventh and ninth to make the final 10-5. Daniels pitched two shutout innings for the win (1-0) and Schellenberg threw the final three for a save (1). The ThunderBolts used eight pitchers, and the starter, Jernstad took the defeat (3-4).
After a Tuesday off, Windy City’s six-game homestand continues Wednesday night at 7:05 against the Normal CornBelters. Todd Privett (4-2) gets the start for the Bolts. Wednesday night’s game is $1.00 hot dog night at Standard Bank Stadium. It can be heard on WXAV 88.3 fm and wxav.com.
