ThunderBolts take series opener from Joliet

CRESTWOOD, IL – On the last Friday night game of 2023 at Ozinga Field, the ThunderBolts were able to send the Windy City faithful home happy with a 6-2 victory over the Joliet Slammers. 

Both squads traded runs in the first inning on a pair of two-out RBI knocks. Zach Biermann got the Slammers (42-46) on the board first, and then Peyton Isaacson responded immediately, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. 

The Bolts (37-50) grabbed their first lead with two outs in the fourth when Jake Boone scored on a wild pitch, which made it a 2-1 game. 

Biermann struck again for the Slammers in the sixth with another two-out RBI single to tie the game at two. 

Will Riley gave the Bolts their final lead of the game in the bottom of the frame, with an RBI single to left field. 

Windy City was able to come up with much-needed insurance an inning later. Micah Yonamine extended the lead to 4-2 with an RBI single, then Junior Martina reached on a blunder from Biermann in right field to reach the final score, 6-2. 

Garrett Christman (8-4) got the start and victory on the hill for Windy City. The right-hander tossed six innings and only allowed two runs while striking out seven. 

Ricky Castro (4-6) opposed Christman and took the loss. Castro gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits in the defeat. 

Game two of this three-game set will take place Saturday night in Crestwood at 6:35 CDT. Left-hander Javier Reynoso (3-1, 5.66) will get the ball for the Bolts. He’ll be opposed by Cam Aufderhide (3-8, 5.15) for Joliet. It is SUPER MEGA Fireworks Night at the ballpark, presented by Lumina Pyrotechnics.
