Bolts run away to second straight win

BOX SCORE

CRESTWOOD, IL – For the second straight day, the ThunderBolts pounced on the Florence Y’alls early and ran away to an easy victory. Their second straight win was an 11-5 final at Ozinga Field.

The Bolts (19-25) fell behind early as Florence (21-23) scored on an error in the top of the second inning. Windy City answered quickly with a four-run bottom half. Paul Coumoulos and Will Riley each had RBIs in the rally.

The Y’alls bounced back with two runs in the top of the fourth to make it a one-run game but for the second time, the ThunderBolts responded with a big rally. Riley drove in one on a base hit and Junior Martina hit a two-run double. By the end of the inning, the Windy City lead had grown to 7-3.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Bolts cemented their lead, thanks in large part to another two-run double from Martina. Dan Robinson and Jake Boone both chipped in RBIs as well on groundouts.

The lead was 11-3 before a Zade Richardson two-run homer for Florence added two late runs and made it an 11-5 final.

Kenny Mathews (1-4) picked up his first win of the year. He went five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) while striking out a season-high eight with no walks. Nathan Florence (4-2), who entered the game as the league’s ERA leader was touched up by the Bolts for seven runs (six earned) over four innings as he took the loss.

The ThunderBolts will go for their first series sweep of the season on Sunday afternoon as Garrett Christman (3-2, 1.95) takes the mound against Florence’s Edgar Martinez (5-2, 2.91). It’s JULIE Family Sunday at Ozinga Field and fans will be able to play catch and get autographs on the field after the game. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m. CT and fans not in attendance can find the broadcast through wcthunderbolts.com.
