ThunderBolts Suffer Second Straight Sweep

JOLIET, IL – For the second straight series, the Windy City ThunderBolts were swept, losing the three-game finale against the Joliet Slammers, 6-4, on Sunday night. It was the sixth straight loss for the Bolts (18-25).

Joliet (24-22) took a first inning lead. Back-to-back singles by Tyler Depreta-Johnson and Scott Holzwasser set up Matt McGarry for an RBI fielder’s choice. Later in the inning, Matt Burch made it 2-0 with an RBI single.

After the opening inning, Kenny Mathews settled in to throw four straight scoreless innings. Meanwhile, the offense backed him up to tie the game. Peyton Isaacson’s fourth inning RBI groundout and Brian Fuentes’ fifth inning RBI fielder’s choice leveled the score, 2-2.

Matt Burch broke the tie, leading off the sixth inning with a solo homer for Joliet. Carson Maxwell scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. Maxwell also extended Joliet’s lead in the eighth, hitting a two-run homer.

In the ninth, Niko Vasic and Jake Vander Wal collected consecutive hits to start the inning. Dan Robinson drove both men in with a single up the middle. The Bolts brought the tying run to the plate but couldn’t muster a comeback.

Chandler Brierly (2-1) earned the win with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Ryan Miller (1-1) took the loss after giving up the go-ahead homer to Burch.
