ThunderBolts swept by Gateway

BOX SCORE

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts scored at least seven runs for the fourth time in their last five games but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Gateway Grizzlies as the Grizzlies completed the sweep with an 11-7 final at Ozinga Field Thursday night.

After two scoreless innings, Gateway (22-20) broke the tie with a four-run third inning. Clint Freeman hit an RBI double and Cesar Trejo knocked in a run on a single.

The ThunderBolts (18-22) were quick to respond, getting back-to-back homers from Brynn Martinez and Joshuan Sandoval to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third.

Gateway, though, tacked on a run in the fourth inning and never looked back. Freeman homered in the fifth to make the score 6-2, the score that held until the eighth inning. That’s when they broke the game wide open. Three hits, two walks and an error contributed to a four-run rally that made the score 10-2.

The ThunderBolts showed some life late as they put up a four-spot of their own in the bottom of the eighth. Brian Fuentes and Jake Boone picked up RBI hits in the inning. Martinez hit his second home run of the night in the ninth inning to keep the offense rolling, but the eight-run deficit proved too much to overcome as Gateway won their third straight over the Bolts.

Brendan Feldmann (3-4) lasted 7.2 innings, allowing five runs and picking up the win. Miguel Ausua (1-3) struggled for the ThunderBolts, giving up five runs on ten hits over 3.2 frames as he took the loss.

The Bolts will begin their longest road trip of the season so far on Friday night when they head just southwest to take on the Joliet Slammers. Garrett Christman (0-1, 5.08) will get the start in the opener with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 CDT. The broadcast can be found through wcthunderbolts.com.
