Gateway turns up offense to beat ThunderBolts

BOX SCORE

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts took an early lead Wednesday night but watched the Gateway Grizzlies score multiple runs in five straight innings as the Bolts fell for the second straight night, 13-9 at Ozinga Field.

In the bottom of the first inning, the ThunderBolts (18-21) loaded the bases with one out on two singles and a walk. JP Williams nearly got out of the jam unscathed when he got Jake Boone to pop up to the catcher with two down, but the ball was dropped, allowing two runs to score.

That was a short-lived lead as Gateway (21-20) plated three in the second. Jose Rosario hit a two-run single and one of three ThunderBolt errors in the game scored the go-ahead run.

The Bolts reclaimed the lead with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. The big hit was a two-run triple from Jairus Richards.

The back-and-forth nature of the game took a turn after that with the Grizzlies taking over. They scored two more runs in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth. Clint Freeman had a pair of RBI hits as Gateway pulled away and Trevor Achenbach hit a two-run homer.

The ThunderBolts fought until the end, trailing 13-7 in the bottom of the ninth. They loaded the bases with three straight walks. Boone and Brynn Martinez each hit sacrifice flies, tightening the score to 13-9 but that was as close as they’d come.

Lukas Veinbergs (1-0) pitched four solid innings out of the Gateway bullpen for the win while Sebastian Selway (1-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) over three innings. John Murphy got the final two outs for his second save.

The three-game series concludes on Thursday. Miguel Ausua (1-2, 6.55) starts for Windy City against Gateway’s Brendan Feldmann (2-4, 4.50) on White Castle Wrestling Night at Ozinga Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be found through wcthunderbolts.com.
