Richards’ Homer Brings Bolts Back

BOX SCORE

Sauget, IL – The Windy City ThunderBolts hit another late-inning, clutch homer on Tuesday night, beating the Gateway Grizzlies, 2-1, at GCS Credit Union Ballpark. Three days after Daryl Myers’ walk-off homer, Jairus Richards played hero with a go-ahead, two-run homer in the top of the ninth.

The game began as a pitcher’s duel between Kenny Mathews and Brendan Feldmann. Mathews pumped in 61 of his 86 pitches for strikes on his way to 6.2 innings of shutout ball for the Bolts (9-7). Mathews didn’t walk anyone and struck out six in a no decision.

In the eighth inning, Gateway (9-7) finally broke a scoreless tie. A two-out single from Isaac Benard kept the inning alive. Two batters later, a ground ball to first base was misplayed, allowing the go-ahead run to score.

The Bolts trailed 1-0 heading into the 9th inning. Feldmann shut the Bolts down for eight innings, retiring 13 in a row entering the final frame. The Gateway right-hander also struck out 10 batters with no walks.

Leading off the 9th, Brynn Martinez coaxed Feldmann’s first walk of the night. The next hitter was Richards. He pushed the Bolts ahead with a two-run homer.

Justin Miller (2-1) recorded the final four outs of the night, earning the win. Feldmann (2-1) took the loss.

The ThunderBolts will try to win the series a day early on Wednesday night. Garrett Christman makes the start on the mound for Windy City against a to-be-determined Gateway starter.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 CDT. The broadcast can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
