Bolts Lose Heartbreaker in Road Trip Opener

BOX SCORE

TROY, NY – In the first road game of the season, the Windy City ThunderBolts lost in walk-off fashion, 5-4 in 10 innings, against the Tri-City ValleyCats. Jesus Lujano hit a walk-off two-run single in the bottom of the 10th inning to send the Bolts to a loss.

The ValleyCats (5-2) scored first on Brad Zunica’s two-run homer in the third inning.

After Zunica’s homer, Garrett Christman didn’t allow another run in his start for the Bolts. He kept Windy City in the game in seven innings of two-run ball.

The Bolts offense rewarded Christman with a run in the top of the fourth. Jace Mercer singled to begin the inning before Daryl Myers drove an RBI double to the gap in right center. Mercer led a rally again in the eighth, collecting an RBI single, tying the game, 2-2.

With the game still locked at 2-2 after nine innings, the Bolts jumped in front for the first time in the game in the 10th. Brynn Martinez hit a two-run homer, delivering a 4-2 advantage.

The Bolts brought Layne Schnitz-Paxton out of the bullpen to try to close the game. However, a bloop single, a throwing error and infield single set up the winning sequence. Lujano came to the plate with the bases loaded and none out in a 4-3 game. The left-hander lined a ball to left-center, scoring the tying and winning runs for the ValleyCats.

Schnitz-Paxton (1-2) took the loss. Trey Cochran-Gill (1-0) earned the win despite allowing Martinez’s homer.

The ThunderBolts will try to even the series on Saturday evening. Bryan Ketchie makes his second start on the mound for Windy City against Tri-City’s Troy Cruz.  First pitch is schedule for 6:00 CDT. The broadcast can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
