ThunderBolts lose late lead in extra inning defeat

Box Score

CRESTWOOD, IL – Bren Spillane hit a three-run homer but it wasn’t enough for the Windy City ThunderBolts as the hosts fell 4-3 to the Quebec Capitales in front of 2,486 fans at Ozinga Field Saturday night.

Garrett Christman and Michael Austin engaged in an exciting pitchers’ duel early in the game with neither starter allowing a run over the first three innings. There were just two total hits during that timeframe.

In the bottom of the fourth, the ThunderBolts (1-2) started to get to Austin. With one out, Manny Garcia and Daryl Myers hit back-to-back singles. Spillane followed with a homer in just his second at bat of the season, putting the Bolts ahead 3-0.

Christman allowed his first run in the fifth inning as Kyle Crowl walked and later came around on a David Glaude sacrifice fly. That was all the Windy City starter would give up over 5.2 innings.

Quebec (2-0) continued to chip away at the bullpen. They got within one in the seventh on a Glaude RBI single.

The score remained 3-2 in the ninth when Layne Schnitz-Paxton issued a leadoff walk to Webb Little. Little stole second base then advanced two bases on a pair of throwing errors, tying the score.

In the tenth inning, Jeffry Parra hit a leadoff double, scoring the tiebreaker runner. The ThunderBolts were unable to advance their free base runner as they fell in their first extra-inning game of the year.

Samuel Adames threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the win while Schnitz-Paxton took the loss.

The ThunderBolts will try to avoid a sweep on Sunday afternoon. Bryan Ketchie makes his season debut on the mound for Windy City against Quebec’s Codie Paiva. It is JULIE Family Sunday at Ozinga Field with a 2:05 CDT scheduled first pitch. The broadcast can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
