ThunderBolts open 2022 with 5-3 win

Box Score

CRESTWOOD, IL – The Windy City ThunderBolts fell behind the Joliet Slammers 2-0 in the top of the first inning but came storming back to take a 5-3 win in the season opener at Ozinga Field Thursday night.

Tyler Thornton settled in after a shaky start. The Slammers (0-1) got a pair of hits and a pair of walks off of the all-star right-hander to build their early lead, but Thornton ended up going five innings without allowing another run, walk or hit.

The ThunderBolts (1-0) got their first run of the season in the bottom of the second inning. Daryl Myers singled and later scored on a Jake Boone groundout. The Bolts tied the score one inning later when Myers singled home Nikola Vasic.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the home team took the lead for good. Payton Robertson doubled and Vasic singled him in. Myers’s third hit of the day, an RBI double, scored Vasic to make it 4-2.

Joliet tightened it on a Luke Mangieri RBI single in the top of the sixth but the ThunderBolts put the game away with their final run in the bottom of the inning.  Boone and Brynn Martinez hit back-to-back triples to extend the lead back to two.

Eight of nine Windy City hitters reached base at least once.

Thornton (1-0) bested Joliet on Opening Night for the second straight year, striking out four over his five inning appearance. Kenny Ogg (0-1) took the loss for the Slammers. He allowed four runs over five innings.

After the brief one-gamer with Joliet, the ThunderBolts continue the season-opening home stand on Friday night with the first of three games against Les Capitales de Quebec. Kenny Mathews debuts his third season in a ThunderBolts uniform on the mound. It is Fright Night at Ozinga Field with a 7:05 CDT scheduled first pitch.
