Weissheier’s Homer Not Enough in Loss to Otters

EVANSVILLE, IN – The Windy City ThunderBolts dropped the opening game of a three-game series, 6-2, against the Evansville Otters on Tuesday night at Bosse Field. With the loss & Schaumburg’s suspended game, the Bolts are 3.5 games back of first place with 18 games to play.

The Bolts (36-42) opened the scoring with a booming two-run homer by Rob Weissheier in the second inning.

It was all Otters (47-31) the rest of the way. In the bottom of the second, Jeffrey Baez hit a lead-off solo homer. After a double and a single, Andy DeJesus grounded out to second, scoring the tying run. The next hitter, Miles Gordon, pushed the Otters ahead for good with a sacrifice fly.

The insurance runs came in single-run innings in the third, seventh and eighth. Dakota Phillips had two of the three RBI with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single. DeJesus hit a seventh inning homer.

The starters took the decisions. Bolts starter Tyler Thornton (4-8) took the loss, allowing five runs in 6.2 innings. Polo Portela (8-2) completed seven innings, giving up two runs. It was Portela’s fourth quality start in as many appearances against the Bolts this season.
