ThunderBolts miss chances in loss to Evansville

CRESTWOOD, IL – Braden Scott struck out 12 ThunderBolt hitters over eight innings as the Bolts came up short in their bid for a third straight win with a 5-2 loss to the Evansville Otters at Ozinga Field Wednesday night.

Both Scott and Windy City starter Miguel Ausua flew through the first three innings. Each team managed just one base runner during that stretch. The fourth inning, however, brought some fireworks. In the top of the frame, Evansville (39-22) loaded the bases on two hits and a walk. Andretty Cordero’s sacrifice fly broke the scoreless tie and Andy DeJesus doubled the lead with an RBI base hit. With the bases again loaded, Cristopher Pujols drew a run-scoring walk to make it 3-0.

The ThunderBolts (25-36) tightened things up in the bottom of the frame. Brynn Martinez and Dan Robinson drew back-to-back walks and a double steal put them both in scoring position with two outs, when Jack Strunc singled them both home.

The pitchers both settled in again after the hectic fourth inning but the Otters got to Ausua again in the seventh. Miles Gordon walked, Pujols reached on an error and both men scored on an Elijah MacNamee single to put the game away.

Scott (5-2) set career highs in innings and strikeouts and earned his third straight win for the Otters. Ausua (6-3) allowed four earned run in seven innings and took the first loss of his last three starts. Logan Sawyer tossed a scoreless ninth inning for his 16th save.

The ThunderBolts wrap up their six-game home stand on Thursday evening, White Castle Wrestling Thursday at Ozinga Field. Zelo Pro Wrestling will put on a postgame show on the concourse. Tyler Thornton (4-6, 2.97) will try to help the Bolts to a series win and Evansville will counter with Polo Portela (7-1, 3.72).
