Wiley’s pitching, power hitting guide ThunderBolts to win

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts hit a pair of home runs in support of Logan Wiley, who tossed seven strong innings as the ThunderBolts defeated the Evansville Otters 5-1 at Ozinga Field Wednesday afternoon.

The Bolts (19-29) got off to a hot start, taking advantage of some wildness from Evansville starter Ryan O’Reilly. He walked two and hit one batter in the first inning. With runners at the corners, a double steal produced the first run. Then Rob Weissheier hit a two-run homer to make it 3-0.

In the third inning, a solo shot from Dan Robinson gave the ThunderBolts  a4-0 lead.

Wiley took over from there. He shut out Evansville (29-19) over the first four innings. In the fifth, two singles put runners at the corners in front of Andy DeJesus, who hit a flyball to left field. Zach Racusin appeared to make a sliding catch but it was ruled a trap and a double for DeJesus, putting the Otters on the board.

That was the extent of their offense, though. In the sixth inning, the ThunderBolts put the game away with another run. Jairus Richards walked and stood at second with two outs. He stole third and an errant throw from the catcher brought him home, making the score 5-1.

Wiley (2-1) allowed five hits and struck out a career-high seven over his seven innings for the win. O’Reilly (1-1) gave up five runs in six innings and took the loss.

The ThunderBolts and Otters wrap up their series with the rubber game on Thursday, the second consecutive Splash Day at Ozinga Field. The 10:35 first pitch will feature Jake Fisher (2-5, 6.89) on the mound for the Bolts against Evansville’s Tim Holdgrafer (3-2, 4.96).
