ThunderBolts fall short in pitchers’ duel

CRESTWOOD, IL – Kenny Mathews pitched his third straight quality start but it wasn’t enough for the ThunderBolts, who saw the Evansville Otters score two runs in the sixth inning to beat the Bolts 3-1.

Evansville (29-18) struck early with a run in the top of the first inning. After Mathews struck out the first two batters of the game, the otters picked up three straight two-out singles to move ahead 1-0. Elijah MacNamee picked up the RBI.

In the second, the ThunderBolts (18-29) tied the score. Zac Taylor reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on a Jack Strunc single.

The Bolts had multiple chances to take the lead after that but they struggled with men on base. In the third inning, they put runners at second and third with no outs before Otters starter Polo Portela recorded three straight out to get out of the jam. After Strunc’s RBI single, the team went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position the rest of the way.

The Otters took the lead for good in the sixth. With two on and one out, MacNamee hit an RBI groundout. Andretty Cordero delivered the final blow with an RBI single to make it 3-1.

Portela (6-0) remained undefeated with the win. He allowed one run in six innings. Mathews (3-6) gave up three runs in six innings and took the loss. Logan Sawyer pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth for his 11th save.

The ThunderBolts and Otters are back at it early on Wednesday for the first of two consecutive Splash Days at Ozinga Field. Both of the remaining games in the series are 10:35 start times. Logan Wiley (1-1, 2.93) makes the game two start for the Bolts against Evansville’s Ryan O’Reilly (1-0, 1.66). Links to the audio and video broadcasts can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
