Sechen Blasts Bolts to Series-Closing Win

FLORENCE, KY – The Windy City ThunderBolts secured a 5-4 road-trip capping win over the Florence Y’alls on Sunday afternoon in Northern Kentucky. John Sechen’s ninth inning solo home run proved to be the game-deciding play.

The Bolts (18-28) offensive production was bookended by long balls. In the first inning, three straight two-out hits got the offense rolling. Rob Weissheier and Jairus Richards collected singles before Zac Taylor sailed a ball over the left field wall for a three-run homer. In the second, Dan Robinson propelled the Bolts to a four-run cushion on a sacrifice fly.

The Y’alls (30-17) scored on an error in the second inning to make it a 4-1 game.

The Bolts cut down on a potential second run in the fourth inning. With a man on first, Rodney Tennie hit a ball into the left field corner. Bolts left fielder Zach Racusin dug the ball out of the corner, hit cutoff man Brynn Martinez, who threw out Jordan Brower at the plate.

Florence didn’t threaten again until the eighth. A walk, single and sacrifice fly chased Tyler Thornton from his start on the mound. Neil Abbatiello entered and allowed three straight singles, bringing home three runs and tying the game, 4-4.

However, the first batter of the ninth was Sechen. He blasted his second homer of the year over the left field fence, breaking the tie.

Danny Zardon (3) came on and worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the save. That gave Abbatiello (1-3) the win. Tyler Thornton took a tough-luck no decision, throwing 7.1 innings of three-run ball. McDonald (0-2) suffered the loss.

The Bolts have the day off Monday before heading back home for a three-game series with the Evansville Otters on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 CT. For live coverage and tickets, fans can find video and audio links at wcthunderbolts.com.
