Bolts Lose in Home Run Derby

AVON, OH – The Windy City ThunderBolts lost the middle game of a three-game series in a home run derby against the Lake Erie Crushers. The score was tied 3-3 after 10 innings and the Crushers won the home run derby 3-2.

The ThunderBolts (11-22) grabbed two runs in the third inning. Jake Hirabayashi doubled to lead off the inning. He scored a batter later on an RBI single by Zach Racusin. Zac Taylor made it 2-0 on an RBI ground rule double.

The Bolts had a chance to extend the lead in the third, but left the bases loaded. It was a similar story in the fourth inning. Three straight singles loaded the bases, but the inning ended when Hirabayashi was thrown out attempting to steal home.

On the mound, Logan Wiley cruised through the opening six innings of his first professional start. He was tossing a shutout until there were two outs in the seventh. With a man on, Connor Oliver tied the game with a two-run homer to center. Wiley finished his night with eight innings of two- run ball and a no decision.

With the game tied at two, heading into extras, the Bolts took advantage of the automatic runner at second base and scored on the first pitch of the 10th. Jairus Richards singled to center, scoring Rob Calabrese. However, the Crushers (18-16) evened the score, 3-3, on Javier Betancourt’s 10th inning RBI single.

In the home run derby, Dan Robinson (0 HR), Calabrese (2 HR) and Peyton Isaacson (0 HR) hit for the ThunderBolts. Brody Wofford (2 HR) and Trevor Achenbach (1 HR) hit for the Crushers, earning the derby win.

The Bolts and Crushers play the final game of the three-game series Sunday night at 6:05 CT. For live coverage, fans can find video and audio links at wcthunderbolts.com.
