ThunderBolts fall short in wild loss

CRESTWOOD, IL – After trailing 11-5 in the eighth inning, the ThunderBolts brought the winning run to the plate in the ninth but came up just short in an 11-10 loss to the Schaumburg Boomers at Ozinga Field Wednesday night.

The Bolts (11-19) struck first with a pair of runs in the second inning. Jairus Richards hit an RBI double and scored on an error to make it 2-0.

Errors were a theme throughout the night. Each team committed four of them and the game featured 14 total unearned runs.

After falling behind, Schaumburg (17-14) scored six of the next seven runs. Brett Milazzo hit a two-run homer and Chase Dawson smashed a three-run shot to help the Boomers pull away.

But the Bolts bounced back with five runs in the eighth. The first two runs scored on wild pitches and then they loaded the bases with two outs and Brynn Martinez cleared them with a triple, making it an 11-10 game. Martinez was stranded at second base.

In the ninth, Dan Robinson drew a one-out walk, once again putting the tying run aboard, but Jake Joyce got Rob Calabrese and Jamey Smart to fly out to end the game.

Ryan Middendorf (3-2) allowed five runs (one earned) over five innings and picked up the win while Miguel Ausua (2-1) took his first loss of the year, giving up six runs (one earned) in his five innings.

The rubber match of the three-game series is scheduled for Thursday night as the ThunderBolts wrap up their six-game home stand. Tyler Thornton (3-3, 2.51) makes the start for Windy City against Schaumburg’s Kyle Arjona (3-3, 3.41). It’s White Castle Wrestling Thursday at Ozinga Field, featuring a postgame show from Zelo Pro Wrestling. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and fans not in attendance can find audio and video broadcasts through wcthunderbolts.com.
