Ausua, Smart Propel Bolts to Win

SCHAUMBURG, IL – Miguel Ausua’s pitching and Jamey Smart’s hitting powered the ThunderBolts 10-3 win over the Schaumburg Boomers on Thursday night at Wintrust Field. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Bolts (10-15).

Ausua set the tone early with his pitching, dueling zero-for-zero with Boomers’ starter Ryan Middendorf. In the fourth, the Bolts backed Ausua with their first run of the night, a Peyton Isaascon RBI single. In the sixth, Jake Hirabayashi belted a double to left center, scoring two more runs.

In the later innings, the Bolts put the game out of reach. Smart led the way with a two-run homer in the seventh, his third hit of the night. Smart collected his fourth hit in the eighth, an RBI double. That was part of a four-run inning where Dan Robinson, Rob Calabrese and Zach Racusin also recorded RBI knocks.

Meanwhile, with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Miguel Ausua had only given up one hit, a first inning infield single to Chase Dawson. With the official scorer contemplating a change, the Boomers pushed a historic night out of the question with three straight hits. An RBI double by Matt McGarry scored two for the Boomers.

Ausua’s night ended with one out in the ninth. An inherited runner scored after he departed, closing his line with 8.1 innings, three runs, six hits, two walks and five strikeouts. Ausua (2-0) earned the win.

Ryan Middenforf (2-2) suffered the loss. In six innings, the Bolts scored three times on the right-hander, the first three runs he had given up at Wintrust Field all season.

The Bolts head home to begin a six-game homestand. The Lake Erie Crushers are in to Ozinga Field for a three-game series, starting at 7:05 Friday night. Fans will be treated to fireworks after the game. For tickets, visit https://www.wcthunderbolts.com/tickets/single-game/ or call 708-489-2255.
