ThunderBolts Lose Wild Game in Extras

SCHAUMBURG, IL – The Windy City ThunderBolts lost an 11-10 decision in extra innings to the Scahumburg Boomers on Wednesday night at Wintrust Field. The ThunderBolts (9-15) led three different times, including in extras, but lost their seventh straight game.

The Bolts got off to a booming start with back-to-back homers in the first inning from Dan Robinson and Rob Calabrese. The Boomers (14-11) answered with a Quincy Nieporte two-run homer in the bottom of the first. The Boomers took the lead in the 2nd on Alberto Schmidt’s RBI single.

The Bolts snatched the lead back on Rob Calabrese’s three-run homer in the third. Calabrese came to the plate again in the fourth and drove in his fifth run of the night on a single, making it 6-3 Bolts.

However, the Boomers re-took the lead with a four-run fourth. Chase Dawson’s squeeze bunt cut the Bolts lead to 6-4. Nieporte’s second homer of the night pushed the Boomers ahead, 7-6. Nieporte walked with the bases loaded in the fifth, making it 8-6.

In the 8th, Jamey Smart brought the Bolts within one on a double. With two outs, a grounder to Boomers’ shortstop Matt McGarry turned into a game-tying play when he threw the ball away, scoring Smart from second.

In extras, Zac Taylor broke the tie with an RBI single. Calabrese added to his big night with an RBI fielder’s choice. The Bolts threatened to make it a big inning, but the rally ended on a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the 10th, Chase Dawson scored on a wild pitch. Nick Ames tied the game on a solo homer. Angelo Gumbs followed with a walk. Brett Milazzo pinch ran for him, advanced to second on a fielder’s choice. Milazzo scored the winning run on a grounder deep in the hole to short by Clint Hardy. Shortstop Brynn Martinez bobbled the grounder, allowing Milazzo to score all the way from second.

Darrell Thompson (2-0) earned the win, tossing the 10th inning. Dylan Prohoroff (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) in the 10th for the Bolts.
