ThunderBolts split doubleheader with Gateway

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts drew 15 walks and overcame a 5-0 deficit to defeat the Gateway Grizzlies 10-5 in game one of a doubleheader at Ozinga Field Sunday afternoon. The Grizzlies got their revenge with a narrow 2-1 win in game two.

Gateway (7-10) batted around in the first inning of game one. Four hits and a costly error allowed them to plate five runs before the ThunderBolts (8-8) came to bat.

The Bolts chipped away. They got a pair of runs in the second inning, thanks in part to a Jack Strunc RBI single. Zach Racusin singled home a run in the third inning to make it 5-3.

Windy City took the lead over in the fifth inning. They drew four walks in the frame and received RBI singles from Peyton Isaacson and Brynn Martinez. Then, in the sixth, reliever Tanner Cable issued five more free passes to force in three more runs, making it a runaway.

Tyler Thornton (3-1) allowed two earned runs in 5.1 innings for the win and Jack Jett (1-1) issued ten walks in five innings for the loss.

Game two was much tighter. Eric Jones’s third-inning homer put the Grizzlies up 1-0 and the ThunderBolts got a run in response on a Jairus Richards RBI single in the fourth.

Andres Regnault led off the top of the fifth inning with a single and scored on a Jay Prather two-out double to wrest the lead back for Gateway, a lead they held the rest of the way.

The game two winner was Carlos Vega (1-1) was the winner, lasting five innings and allowing only three hits. Neil Abbatiello (0-2) allowed two runs over 4.2 innings for the loss. Justin Watts pitched the seventh for his second save.

The ThunderBolts begin a three-game series at home against the Schaumburg Boomers on Tuesday night. Kenny Mathews(1-2, 6.59) starts against Schaumburg’s Andrew Dean (1-2, 4.85). It is a Value Tuesday at Ozinga Field, featuring two dollar tickets and hot dogs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
