Joliet downs ThunderBolts with eighth inning rally

JOLIET, IL – After a back-and-forth ballgame, the Joliet Slammers scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat the ThunderBolts 7-4 at DuPage Medical Group Field Friday night.

The Slammers (4-4) struck first with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Brylie Ware took a walk before a two-run homer for Brian Parreira.

Despite multiple chances, the ThunderBolts (4-3) weren’t able to answer until the fifth. They had five hits over the first four innings but left seven men on base before they finally broke through. Dan Robinson led off the fifth inning with a walk and Zac Racusin doubled. They scored on a Rob Calabrese groundout and Jose Layer single, respectively.

The next inning, the Bolts took their first lead thanks to a Zac Taylor RBI double.

Joliet tied it up on a solo home run for Braxton Davidson but the ThunderBolts reclaimed the lead in the top of the eighth. Jack Strunc singled and scored all the way from second base on an infield hit for Taylor.

The Bolts were just six outs from the win, but Joliet loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning on two walks and a single. Patrick Causa brought home the tying and leading runs with a base hit. As the inning progressed, three ThunderBolt errors allowed two more runs to score, putting the game away.

Gerald Bautista (1-0) picked up the win out of the Slammers’ bullpen, allowing a run in 2.1 innings. Neil Abbatiello (0-1) took the loss for the Bolts. Windy City starter Cole Bellair went six innings and allowed three runs.

The ThunderBolts’ five-game road trip continues with game two at Joliet on Saturday night. Jake Fisher (1-0, 8.10) gets his second start against the Slammers’ Cam Aufderheide (0-1, 1.13). First pitch from DuPage Medical Group Field is scheduled for 6:05.
