Bolts ride clutch performances in win over Crushers

Bolts 2 Crushers 1

CRESTWOOD, IL -- The ThunderBolts got clutch at-bats from Shane Carrier and Tyler Alamo late, as Tyler Thornton tossed eight stellar innings in a 2-1 series-evening victory over the Lake Erie Crushers Saturday evening.

Thornton was on his game from the get-go as the ThunderBolts (20-24) right-hander set down the Lake Erie (20-21) side in order across the first three frames. The Crushers notched the game’s first run in the fifth, but that was all the offense Lake Erie could muster.

John Cable led off with a tapper back to the mound, and Thornton tossed over to first base routinely, but with the sun blinding the first baseman Alamo, Cable was able to reach on the error. A single followed by a sacrifice bunt set up men at second and third, as Cable ultimately was able to score on a wild pitch.

Windy City responded in the sixth inning thanks to a one-out double from Omar Obregon, who was driven in later by Shane Carrier on a two-out single to right field. The Bolts mounted the game winning rally in the eighth.

Brynn Martinez tripled up the right field line with one out, and after an intentional walk to Omar Obregon, Alamo stood in with runners at the corners. Alamo tapped one up the third baseline to score the go ahead run in Martinez to give the ThunderBolts a 2-1 lead.

Colby Blueberg came on in the ninth inning and set down the side in order to notch his second save. Thornton (3-1) earned the win after allowing just the one unearned run on five hits over eight innings with six strikeouts and one walk. Dalton Geekie (1-2) took the loss.

The ThunderBolts look to win the rubber game on Sunday, as they turn to Chris Washington (1-5, 3.19) on the bump. Sunday is JULIE, Inc. Family Sunday at the ballpark and there will be a Chicago Bubble Show by Anastasia Filippova during the contest.

First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 and those not in attendance may listen to the broadcast live on wcthunderbolts.com.
