Miners knock out Bolts early in opener

Miners 11 Bolts 0

MARION, IL – The Southern Illinois Miners scored four runs in the first inning and went on to beat the ThunderBolts 11-0, extending the Bolts’ losing streak to seven games in the first of a three-game series at Rent One Park Tuesday night.

The ThunderBolts (17-23) had an early chance, putting runners at first and second base with one out in the first inning but came up short in their attempt to strike first and Southern Illinois (23-15) took advantage, grasping the first lead with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame. Jarrod Watkins’s two-run double was the big blow of the inning.

The game continued to follow that pattern as the Bolts consistently got men on base but didn’t score them. They had at least one base runner in every inning but finished 2-for-20 hitting with men on base.

After the ThunderBolts stranded the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Southern Illinois added to their lead with an Anthony Jimenez homer in the bottom of the inning and the rout was on. Kyle Davis and Gianfranco Wawoe also homered in the latter innings for the Miners.

Omar Obregon led the Windy City offense, reaching base three times. Tyler Straub, Shane Carrier and Randy Perez each got on twice.

Marty Anderson (3-0) ended up going five shutout innings and earning the win while Kenny Mathews (1-5) struggled through his five innings, allowing six runs on ten hits as he took the loss.

The ThunderBolts will get another chance to snap their streak on Wednesday night as Christian Morris (2-4, 3.59) gets the start against Southern Illinois’s Austin Dubsky (4-2, 5.12). First pitch from Rent One Park is scheduled for 6:35 and the radio broadcast can be heard on WXAV, 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
