Bolts break up no-hitter in ninth, fall to Gateway 5-0

CRESTWOOD, IL – Lucas Lanphere carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning and finished with a complete game one-hit shutout as he led the Gateway Grizzlies over the ThunderBolts 5-0 at Ozinga Field Saturday night.

Lanphere walked only two and struck out 11 for the Grizzlies (12-14), who took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when they loaded the bases on a single, a walk and a hit by pitch. Connor Owings drove in what turned out to be the game-winning run with a groundout and Luke Lowery brought home another on a bunt single.

Gateway loaded the bases again in the fourth inning on three singles. With two outs, Jamey Smart doubled down the right field line. The first two runs scored but Shawon Dunston, Jr. was cut down at the plate to keep the score 4-0.

Through the first six innings, the ThunderBolts (12-14) had only one base runner, a Micah Coffey walk. Dash Winningham joined the list with two outs in the seventh inning, when he drew a base on balls but he was stranded at first base.

Lanphere came back with a perfect eighth inning before retiring Brynn Martinez on the first pitch of the ninth. Manuel Mesa followed with a soft ground ball to the shortstop. The throw to first base was late and Mesa’s infield single ended up as the only hit of the night for the ThunderBolts.

Lanphere (1-2) picked up the win in his first career complete game and Christian Morris (1-3) allowed four runs over six innings and took the loss.

The ThunderBolts will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday afternoon at 2:05. It is JULIE, Inc. Family Sunday at Ozinga Field where four tickets, four hot dogs, four chips, four drinks and four ThunderBolt hats are only $39. It is also Boomer’s Mascot Mania. Fans not in attendance can hear the radio broadcast at WXAV, 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
