Rascals shut down ThunderBolt bats in the finale

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts were held to four hits as they dropped the finale of a three-game series, 3-0, to the River City Rascals at Ozinga Field Sunday afternoon.

On the 20th anniversary of the first game ever played at the ballpark, a 1-0 Cook County Cheetahs win over the Rascals, pitching reigned again. This time, though, River City (13-9) carried the day, scoring the winning run on the third pitch of the game.

After Cody Livesay blooped a double down the left field line, he moved to third on a throwing error and scored on an Andrew Penner groundout. The next inning, Nolan Meadows walked, moved to second on a balk and came home on a two-out single for James Morisano.

The ThunderBolts (10-11) had two men on base in the first inning but didn’t score and Alex Winkelman shut them down over the next three innings, retiring 11 batters in a row. Only twice the rest of the game did the Bolts get a man to second base and they never had a runner each third.

The Rascals posted the final run in the sixth inning. Tanner Murphy was hit by a pitch and Nolan Meadows walked before JD Hearn hit a fly to right field. Shane Carrier slipped and the ball dropped for an RBI hit, making the score 3-0.

Alex Winkelman (2-2) tossed seven shutout innings and earned the win while Christian Morris (1-2) allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings and took the loss. Jackson Sigman threw a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

After taking both Monday and Tuesday off, the ThunderBolts return to action on the road with a Wednesday doubleheader in Florence. Tyler Thornton (2-0, 0.33) and Austin Jones (0-1, 4.50) will be the starters for the Bolts against the Florence Freedom. Game one is slated for a 4:35 start time and the radio broadcast can be found at wcthunderbolts.com.
