Bolts drop finale in River City

Rascals 5 Bolts 2

O’FALLON, MO – Despite a pair of home run and a Braulio Torres-Perez complete game, the ThunderBolts dropped the finale to River City 5-2 at Carshield Field on Thursday night.

Omar Obregon homered on the first pitch of the game, his second homer of the year and first since joining the ThunderBolts (28-42). The homer gave Obregon a 20-game hitting streak.

It didn’t take long for the Rascals (37-33) to respond. In the bottom of the inning, Trevor Achenbach singled in front of Mike Jurgella, who hit a two-run homer, giving River City the 2-1 lead.

Jurgella tacked on another run with his second home run of the game in the third and the Rascals scored again with two outs in the inning as Clint Freeman doubled and Ross Haffey singled him home.

After the Obregon home run in the first inning, Jonny Ortiz settled in and retired the next 11 batters in a row. The streak was finally broken up by a Tyler Straub home run in the fourth that cut the deficit to 4-2.

That was all the Bolts managed, though, against Ortiz. He locked down the offense, retiring ten of the last 12 men he faced.

River City scored once more, adding their insurance run when Kevin Suarez singled and scored on a Paul Kronenfeld base hit in the seventh.

Torres-Perez went the distance for Windy City despite allowing ten hits in the game. He threw 159 pitches over his eight innings and gave up just one run after the third, but he took the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season.

Ortiz improved to 5-1 with his eight-inning effort and Joe Iorio pitched the ninth for his second save.

The ThunderBolts return home on Friday to start a six-game home stand. The Southern Illinois Miners are in town for Camp Out Night, presented by Emagine Theater-Frankfort. Eddie Avila (1-5, 6.23) makes the start for Windy City against Steven Ridings (7-4, 3.83) of Southern Illinois. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
