Bolts blank Boomers for doubleheader sweep

Bolts 3 Boomers 0

CRESTWOOD, IL – Backed by a strong performance by starter Jake Welch, the ThunderBolts swept a day-night doubleheader over the Schaumburg Boomers after a 3-0 win in the nightcap at Standard Bank Stadium Thursday.

The Boomers (34-29) could not take advantage of multiple opportunities against Welch and company, as the Schaumburg offense managed at least one baserunner in every inning, but were unable to score. Welch’s biggest threats came in the second and fourth innings after the Boomers put runners at the corners with two outs in each frame.

Ultimately, like each of his seven-plus frames, Welch did not allow a Schaumburg baserunner to cross home plate. The Boomers left nine men on base overall in the contest.

The ThunderBolts (25-38) got on the board in the third inning. Joe Becht singled and later moved to third after a walk and sacrifice bunt. Axel Johnson flipped a fly ball to leftfield that was deep enough to score Becht on a sacrifice fly.

In the sixth, Tim Zier walked, stole second base and scored on a Larry Balkwill blooper to left-centerfield to increase the Bolts’ lead to 2-0.

They added an insurance run in the eighth. Omar Obregon, who increased his hitting streak to 13 and his on-base streak to 28 games with a single in the first, reached for the third time on the night after a base hit. He later scored on a wild pitch to put Windy City ahead 3-0.

Jake Welch (5-3) earned the win after seven shutout innings of six-hit ball. Colton Follett and Jack Anderson pitched two scoreless innings of relief, with Anderson earning his fifth save. Chris Powell (0-1) took the loss.

The ThunderBolts hit the road for six games beginning with a three-game weekend set against the Lake Erie Crushers. Braulio Torres-Perez (1-1, 3.65) will start for Windy City in game one.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
