Bolts drop close game in Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The ThunderBolts took two early leads but the Traverse City Beach Bums were able to come back twice to defeat the Bolts 3-2 at Wuerfel Park Friday night.

Riley Krane led off the second inning for the ThunderBolts (9-14) with a single and moved to second when Darius Day walked. Ransom LaLonde brought him home on a two-out RBI single to get the scoring started.

Will Landsheft started for the Bolts but had to leave after only one inning and Max Dwyer came out of the bullpen for his professional debut. Dwyer retired the first four batters he faced but walked the next four, forcing in the tying run.

Larry Balkwill’s solo homer in the fourth put the ThunderBolts back ahead at 2-1 before Traverse City (10-14) came back with their first three hits of the game in the fifth inning. Isaac Benard and Luke Lowery both doubled to tie the score and Lowery scored the go-ahead run on a Steve Lohr single.

The Bolts put the tying run on second base with less than two outs in each of the final three innings but in each case, they were unable to advance him.

Jordan Desguin (3-0) pitched six innings, allowing two runs for Traverse City in taking the win and Jake Roehn (0-1) picked up the loss, giving up two runs in 2.2 innings. Overall, the ThunderBolts’ bullpen allowed three runs in seven innings of work.

John Michael Knighton threw two hitless innings for Traverse City to earn his third save.

The ThunderBolts continue their season-long nine-game road trip on Saturday night with game two against Traverse City. The Bolts will start Zac Westcott (0-4, 3.82) against the Beach Bums’ Adam Cornwell (0-3, 6.75). First pitch from Wuerfel Park is scheduled for 6:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
