ThunderBolts win opener at Traverse City

Bolts 7 Bums 2

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – Jake Fisher picked up his eighth win of the year, going eight innings to defeat the Traverse City Beach Bums as the Bolts pulled away late for a 7-2 win at Wuerfel Park Friday night.

Both teams were unable to capitalize on early chances as the ThunderBolts (44-37) left four men on base in the first four innings and Traverse City (31-48) stranded one in each of the first three.

The Bums broke through on two fourth-inning doubles to start the scoring. Nick Murphy knocked in Luke Lowery.

The ThunderBolts answered immediately with two in the fifth. Blair Beck started the rally with a single. Keenyn Walker followed with a double and Coco Johnson knocked them both in with a single.

They added to the lead with two more runs in the seventh. Johnson hit a leadoff triple and when the throw to third sailed into the dugout, Johnson came in to score. Kyle Wood followed with a double and Larry Balkwill singled him home to make the lead 4-1.

Back-to-back doubles in the eighth for Beck and Walker scored the fifth runs and Walker was brought home by a Wood single. Will Krug’s RBI single in the ninth finished the ThunderBolts’ scoring.

Traverse City got one more run as Arby Fields walked and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Fisher (8-7) went eight innings for the eighth time in his last nine starts and allowed only one earned run while striking out nine to surpass the century mark for the third time in the last four years. Reinaldo Lopez (3-10) took the loss, allowing four runs in six innings.
