Bolts bats silenced in 3-1 loss

CRESTWOOD, IL – Clay Chapman allowed only two runs in 7.1 innings but he was outdueled by Brian Bayliss as the ThunderBolts fell to the Traverse City Beach Bums 3-1 at Standard Bank Stadium Sunday night.

Chapman faced the minimum through the first three innings but allowed his first hit to Jeff DeBlieux, a single leading off the fourth inning. Orlando Rivera followed with a single and both men advanced on a groundout. Alexis Rivera’s sacrifice fly scored DeBlieux to make it 1-0.

Alexis Rivera hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to add one to the Traverse City lead.

The ThunderBolts (41-35) had two men on base with two outs in the first inning but couldn’t score. Singles from Tim Zier and Corey Bass put two on with one out in the fourth. They moved up on a groundout but both were stranded in scoring position.

They didn’t threaten again against Bayliss, who threw 6.1 dhutout innings.

The Beach Bums (28-47) brought in their closer, Enrique Opuendo for the ninth and the first batter he faced, Larry Balkwill, hit a solo homer to left. Two of the next three hitters walked to put the tying run on base with one out. Oquendo departed and Augie Gallardo got the final two outs. Ransom LaLonde flew out to the warning track and Blair Beck struck out to end the game.

Bayliss (2-4) picked up the win while Chapman (4-5) took the loss. For Gallardo, it was a first career save.

After taking Monday off, the ThunderBolts play a doubleheader against the Lake Erie Crushers on Tuesday. Game one will be the completeion of a suspended game with the ThunderBolts trailing 2-0 in the third. Game two will be seven innings.
