ThunderBolts routed in Joliet finale

JOLIET, IL – The Joliet Slammers scored six runs in the third inning and ran away with an 11-2 win over the ThunderBolts at Slammers Stadium Thursday night.

The ThunderBolts (39-34) scored the game’s first run in the top of the second inning. Larry Balkwill singled and moved up on a Kyle Wood hit by pitch and a Tim Zier groundout. Corey Bass’s groundout scored him to make it 1-0.

Joliet (33-40) responded immediately with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Spencer Navin doubled and scored on a Dom Iero base hit. Travis Bolin doubled home Iero.

They added six more in the third inning, chasing TJ Santiago after only seven outs. Melvin Rodriguez was the first of 11 batters to come to the plate in the inning and he singled. They loaded the bases with no outs before Danny Zardon singled home the first run. Dom Iero followed with a two-run double and after a walk loaded the bases again, Luis Diaz cleared them with a double that put Joliet ahead 8-1.

A Navin sacrifice fly and an RBI single for Bolin added two more to the lead in the fourth inning and the Slammers capped their scoring binge with a run in the fifth that scored on two ThunderBolt errors.

The Bolts’ final score came in on a Larry Balkwill solo home run in the eighth inning, his team-leading 13th of the year.

Conrad Wozniak (3-1) went seven innings in his Joliet debut for the win and Santiago (3-4) allowed eight runs and took the loss.

The ThunderBolts return home to begin a seven-game home stand on Friday. The Traverse City Beach Bums come to town for Princess Night II as well as pint glass giveaway, courtesy of Lakeshore Beverage. The ThunderBolts will also be wearing special jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game for Illinois Operation Lifesaver and fireworks will follow the game. Will Landsheft makes his ThunderBolts debut on the mound and Traverse City will throw Dominic Reed. First pitch from Standard Bank Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
