JOLIET, IL – The ThunderBolts took a big early lead and withstood a late Joliet charge to defeat the Slammers 8-6 at Slammers Stadium Tuesday night. The ThunderBolts (39-32) scored the game’s first three runs in the second inning. With one out, they got three straight hits, singles from Kyle Wood and Tim Zier and a two-run double for Corey Bass. Bass would score on a two-out single for Blair Beck. They added a run in the fourth when Wood singled and scored on a Ransom LaLonde base hit, then pulled away with three more runs in the sixth. Larry Balkwill walked, Zier singled and Bass singled to load the bases. LaLonde came through again with a two-run single and Beck brought home another run on a groundout. The Slammers (31-40) started a comeback with two runs in the sixth. They got singles in the inning from David Gonzalez, Melvin Rodriguez and Edwin Gomez, the latter two scoring runs. Coco Johnson led off the seventh with a single, stole second and third and scored on a Kyle Wood sacrifice fly to keep the ThunderBolts ahead 8-2. Joliet kept it interesting with two runs in the eighth inning. Dom Iero singled and Ridge Hoopii-Haslam walked and they scored on a Gomez groundout and Danny Zardon single, respectively. In the ninth inning, Brady Burzynski singled and Iero walked before Hoopii-Haslam’s single scored Burzynski. Brian Loconsole came out of the bullpen and immediately, Rodriguez singled in another run, making it 8-6 and putting the tying run on base. Loconsole struck out Gomez to end the game, securing his 25th save. Clay Chapman (4-4) allowed just one earned run in seven innings for the win and Shane Bryant (4-6) took the loss. He allowed seven runs in 5.1 innings. The Bolts continue their series in Joliet on Wednesday night. Zac Westcott (5-4, 5.67) will start against Joliet’s Scot Hoffman, who will be making his team debut. First pitch from Slammers Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com. |
