ThunderBolts drop finale in Washington

Things 7 Bolts 3

WASHINGTON, PA – The Washington Wild Things hit four home runs as they defeated the ThunderBolts in the finale of a three-game series 7-3 at Wild Things Park Sunday evening.

Washington (29-24) began their power display in the first inning as two of the first three batters reached in front of Brailin Jackson, who hit a three-run homer to give the Things a lead they would not relinquish. Mike Hill followed with a solo homer three pitches later, making it 4-0.

The ThunderBolts (30-23) got on the board in the fourth inning as Kyle Wood doubled and Riley Krane knocked him in on a two-out single.

After the first inning, Zac Westcott settled in and retired 13 of the next 14 hitters but Kane Sweeney snapped that string with a long home run to lead off the sixth inning, giving the Wild Things a 5-1 lead.

The ThunderBolts, who had come from three runs down to win on Saturday, continued to fight as they tightened the game with a run in the seventh. Larry Balkwill walked and Krane singled before Corey Bass’s two-out base hit advanced Balkwill to third. A misplay by James Harris in right field allowed Balkwill to score.

They picked up another run in the eighth when Blair Beck singled and Coco Johnson doubled. Beck scored on a Wood single but Johnson was stranded at third and the Bolts still trailed 5-3.

Jackson put the game away with his second home run, a two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth.

Chase Cunningham, who had not allowed a run in 15 innings against the ThunderBolts coming in, improved to 7-1 as he pitched 7.1 innings and gave up three runs. Westcott (5-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on three homers in six innings.

The ThunderBolts take Monday off and return home to begin a three-game set with the Evansville Otters on Tuesday morning. TJ Santiago (1-1, 5.94) gets the start for the Bolts. Standard Bank Stadium will be turned into a giant water park with dunk tanks, water balloons and more on the first of three straight Big Splash Days presented by Pirate’s Cay Indoor Water Park. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 and the broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
