Bolts ride big inning to third straight win

Bolts 5 Bums 4

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The ThunderBolts scored five runs on seven hits in the fourth inning to come from behind, defeating the Traverse City Beach Bums 5-4 in game one of a three-game series at Wuerfel Park Friday night.

Steven Patterson hit a solo home run for Traverse City (18-24) in the first inning to give the Beach Bums a quick 1-0 lead. They added to it in the third inning. Patterson and Will Kengor walked and were both on base with two outs when Kendall Patrick picked up an RBI single. John Montgomery followed with a base hit to make the score 3-0.

The ThunderBolts (23-20) cam back with their big fourth inning. Three consecutive singles for Kyle Wood, Larry Balkwill and Riley Krane got things started as Krane picked up his fourth RBI in five games. Later, with two outs in the inning, Ransom LaLonde delivered with an RBI base hit. Blair Beck followed with a two-run double that gave the Bolts their first lead at 4-3. Keenyn Walker’s single scored Beck and made it 5-3.

The Bolts loaded the bases with one out in the fifth but Joe Mello pitched out of the jam and the Traverse City bullpen held the ThunderBolts hitless over the final four innings.

Kengor hit a solo homer in the fifth to make it a one-run game, but the ThunderBolts bullpen did their job just as well as Traverse City’s. John Jaeger, Josh Glick, Scott Kuzminsky and Brian Loconsole each threw a hitless frame of relief to seal the win.

TJ Santiago (1-1) allowed four runs in five innings and picked up his first professional win. Kramer Champlin (4-3) gave up five runs in 3.2 innings for the loss. Loconsole earned his league-high 16th save.

The ThunderBolts and Beach Bums continue their three-game series on Saturday evening. Jake Fishr (2-4, 4.90) will get the game two start for the Bolts against Traverse City’s Kenneth Knudsen (1-0, 4.50). First pitch from Wuerfel Park is set for 6:05 and the broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
