ThunderBolts shutout in game one at Schaumburg

Boomers 3 Bolts 0

SCHAUMBURG, IL – Kagen Hopkins held the ThunderBolts to one hit over 7.1 innings and the Bolts could not mount a rally against the Schaumburg bullpen as the Boomers took game one of a three game series 3-0 at Boomers Stadium Tuesday night.

Schaumburg (26-8) got on the board in the first inning as Kyle Ruchim walked and Zach Weigel singled to put two men on base. Seth Spivey added to his league-leading RBI total with a sacrifice fly to make the score 1-0.

Jake Fisher settled in and threw four straight shutout innings to keep the score close.

The ThunderBolts (19-16) could not get anything going on offense, though, as Hopkins did not give up anything after a David Kerian single led off the third inning. The next 15 batters were retired as Hopkins set a Boomers record with 12 strikeouts in the game.

Schaumburg added two to their lead with two outs in the sixth. With David Harris at second base, Sean Godfrey singled to double the lead. James Keller doubled home Godfrey, making it 3-0.

The Boomers threatened in the seventh with the bases loaded and no outs but Chris Chigas came out of the bullpen and prevented any runs from scoring.

The ThunderBolts had one last chance in the ninth, putting two runners on with no outs. Alec Kenilvort pitched out of it, though, for his fifth save.

Hopkins (4-1) picked up the win while Fisher (2-3) allowed three runs in six innings for the loss.

The ThunderBolts and Boomers resume the series with game two on Wednesday morning, an 11:00 start time. Clay Chapman (0-4, 3.71) will be on the mound for the Bolts and Schaumburg will counter with Conrad Wozniak (0-0, 1.61). The game will be broadcast on WXAV 88.3 FM and online at wxav.com.
