ThunderBolts drop game one at Schaumburg

Boomers 3 Bolts 2

SCHAUMBURG, IL – The Schaumburg Boomers scored three unanswered runs to erase an early ThunderBolts lead and take game one of a three game series 3-2 at Boomers Stadium Friday night.

The ThunderBolts (12-7) got on the board in the second inning as Larry Balkwill hit his second home run of the week and third of the season to go ahead 1-0.

The Bolts added another run in the third. Coco Johnson doubled, stole third and scored on an error to double the lead.

Schaumburg (14-5) answered with a run in the bottom of the third. Alex Fink and Jack Parenty each singled to put two on base in front of Kyle Ruchim, who singled home Fink. Both Parenty and Ruchim were thrown out on the bases on the play, but the run counted to make the score 2-1.

A Seth Spivey double and Sean Godfrey RBI single in the fourth tied it at two.

Kenny Towns went deep for the Boomers in the sixth inning to put Schaumburg on top for the first time at 3-2.

The ThunderBolts had scoring chances in almost every inning but couldn’t come up with another run. They left the bases loaded in the sixth and runners at the corners in the seventh. In all, Windy City left 12 men on base, six of them in scoring position as Schaumburg used five pitchers to consistently get out of jams.

Austin Kerr (3-1) pitched out of the bases loaded spot in the sixth and threw 1.1 shutout innings to pick up the win. Kyle Von Ruden (1-1) started for the ThunderBolts and allowed three runs in six innings in taking his first loss. Alec Kenilvort’s perfect ninth registered his second save.

The ThunderBolts take and Boomers continue their three-game set on Saturday. Game two will feature a start from Jake Fisher (2-0, 5.06) for the Bolts against Schaumburg’s Conrad Wozniak (0-0, 5.06). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 and the game broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
