ThunderBolts shutout in Southern Illinois

Miners 3 Bolts 0

MARION, IL – The ThunderBolts were held to three hits in their series opener against the Southern Illinois Miners as former ThunderBolt Dyllon Nuernberg pitched the Miners to a 3-0 victory at Rent One Park Tuesday night.

Nuernberg had control problems throughout his five-inning stint, walking a career-high seven batters, but he was able to pitch out of several jams. The ThunderBolts (29-32) had a chance to take an early lead, loading the bases on a single and two walks with no outs in the second inning. Nuernberg, though, struck out the next three hitters.

The Miners (43-17) broke through in the bottom of the inning, drawing two walks off of Bolts starter Kyle Von Ruden. Francisco Rosario’s two-out single scored the game’s first run.

Nolan Earley hit a solo homer in the fourth to make the Miners’ lead 2-0.

The ThunderBolts had another chance in the fifth as Nuernberg loaded the bases on three walks. Again, though, he got out of the jam with a strikeout. Overall, the Bolts stranded ten men and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Von Ruden pitched 5.1 innings before the bullpen took over. Chris Chigas and Austin Delmotte combined to pitch out of a bases loaded spot in the sixth and Zac Westcott retired all five batters he faced to keep the game close. Delmotte did see a run score in the seventh, though, as Shane Kennedy picked up an RBI double.

Windy City’s last chance came in the ninth as they brought the tying run to the plate following two singles. Former Frontier League Pitcher of the Year Adam Lopez got the final three outs for his seventh save and the Miners' ninth straight win.

Nuernberg (6-1) worked five one-hit innings for the win and Von Ruden (1-1) allowed two runs in the loss.

The ThunderBolts and Miners continue their series on Wednesday night. Brady Muller (2-6, 3.44) gets the game two start for Windy City against Dan Ludwig (7-1, 3.18) for Southern Illinois. First pitch from Rent One Park is scheduled for 7:05 and the game broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
