ThunderBolts win on tenth inning walkoff

Bolts 4 Grizzlies 3

CRESTWOOD, IL – Corey Bass’s two-run double in the bottom of the tenth turned a 3-2 deficit for the Windy City ThunderBolts into a 4-3 victory over the Gateway Grizzlies at Standard Bank Stadium Sunday night.

The Grizzlies (30-32) carried the lead for much of the game as they took a 2-0 edge in the third inning. Cody Livesay singled and Craig Massoni hit a two-run homer.

Gateway had multiple chances to extend the lead, but left eight men on base in the first five innings.

The ThunderBolts (29-31) clawed back to tie the score. They brought their first run in when Corey Bass singled in the fourth inning and Ransom LaLonde doubled him home. Charley Thurber hit his first home run as a ThunderBolt in the fifth inning, a solo shot that knotted the score at two.

Rain hit in the eighth inning with the score tied 2-2. There was a 57-minute delay before play resumed and neither team was able to score over the final inning and a half, sending the game into the tenth.

Tyler Teweel homered for Gateway on the first pitch of the inning to put his team back in front 3-2.

The Bolts fought back, getting back-to-back singles from Coco Johnson and Tim Zier with one out in the inning. Bass followed with a double down the right field line. Johnson scored easily and Zier slid in just in front of the throw to secure the 4-3 win.

Austin Delmotte (1-0) threw two innings of relief for his first win and Kevin Jefferies (1-1) took the loss, allowing two runs in the tenth.

The ThunderBolts take Monday off and begin a six-game road trip on Tuesday in Marion, Illinois against the Southern Illinois Miners. Kyle Von Ruden (1-0, 1.80) gets the game one start for Windy City against former ThunderBolt Dyllon Nuernberg (5-1, 2.84) for Southern Illinois. First pitch from Rent One Park is scheduled for 7:05 and the game broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
