ThunderBolts drop back-and-forth affair to Schaumburg

Boomers 8 Bolts 7

CRESTWOOD, IL – The ThunderBolts jumped out to a 4-0 lead but couldn’t hold on as the Schaumburg Boomers came from behind to take game one of the weekend series 8-7 in front of 2,670 fans at Standard Bank Stadium Friday night.

Reggie Lawson and Blair Beck started the second inning with singles for the ThunderBolts (17-8) and Corey Bass followed with a three-run homer to put the Bolts on top. Cody Keefer singled and scored on a Taylor Smart double to make it a four-run second inning.

Schaumburg (11-14) was quick to bounce back. They got a run in the third on a passed ball that followed a Jordan Dean triple.

Four more runs followed in the fourth. James Keller and Justin Byrd each came up with hits before Josh Gardiner knocked them both in on a double. Jordan Dean’s base hit scored Gardiner and Dusty Robinson singled home Dean to make it 5-4 Boomers.

Paul Kronenfeld’s home run made it 6-4 the following inning but the Bolts fought back. They loaded the bases in the sixth on two walks and a hit batter and Kevin Barker singled in two runs to tie the score.

Byrd’s seventh-inning single scored Shawn Payne to put the Boomers back on top and Chris Robinson, who had been hit by a pitch, came home as part of a double steal attempt, to go ahead 8-6.

Lawson singled with two outs in the ninth and scored on a Blair Beck double to tighten the score to 8-7 but Dexter Price struck out Bass to lock up his second save.

Jake Joyce (3-2) picked up the win, throwing 1.1 scoreless relief innings. Brandon Boyle (4-1) allowed the two seventh-inning runs to take the loss.
