Muller throws one-hitter in Bolts' fifth straight win

SCHAUMBURG, IL – Brady Muller threw a complete game one-hitter for his first career victory as the ThunderBolts defeated the Schaumburg Boomers 2-1, their fifth straight win, at Boomers Stadium Friday night.

The Boomers (1-6) held the lead for the majority of the game as they scored in the bottom of the second inning. Dusty Robinson hit a leadoff double and was advanced to third by a Paul Kronenfeld groundout. He scored on a Josh Gardiner groundout.

Muller retired 14 straight batters after the Robinson double and did not allow a hit the rest of the night, but Scott Schultz was almost as good for Schaumburg. He had allowed just three hits through six innings before the ThunderBolts (6-1) got some help from Boomers errors in the seventh.

Corey Bass reached on a Jordan Dean misplay and stood at second with two outs when Taylor Smart hit a groundball to short. Dean, a second baseman who was playing out of position due to an injury, threw the ball away for his third error of the game, allowing Bass to score. Kevin Barker followed with a double to score Smart and give the Bolts a 2-1 lead.

That would be enough as Muller continued to post zeroes. He allowed just four total baserunners, walking two and never allowed a runner past first base after the second inning. Muller struck out four and walked two and improved his record to 1-1 this season.

Schultz (0-1) did not allow an earned run in 6.2 innings but he took the tough-luck loss.

The ThunderBolts will go for their sixth straight win Saturday night in game two against the Boomers. Clay Chapman (1-0, 0.00) will make his second start of the year for the Bolts against Schaumburg’s Gunnar Kines (0-0, 6.75). First pitch from Boomers Stadium is scheduled for 6:00 and the radio broadcast can be heard on WXAV 88.3 FM and wxav.com.
