ThunderBolts lose season finale 7-1

Things 7 Bolts 1

WASHINGTON, PA – The Washington Wild Things took an early lead and pulled away from the ThunderBolts late as the Bolts lost their final game of 2015 7-1 at CONSOL Energy Park Sunday afternoon.

The Wild Things (42-54) got the scoring started with back-to-back hits to begin the second inning. David Popkins singled and Daniel Poma doubled him in. Washington added two more runs in the fourth. They loaded the bases on two infield singles and a walk. Matt Ford drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home one run and another scored on Sam Mende’s infield hit.

The ThunderBolts got their only run in the sixth when Mike Torres and Austin Gallagher hit back-to-back doubles and made it 3-1.

Washington, though, pulled away, scoring a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh. Sam Mende’s RBI double made the score 4-1 and two walks in the following frame helped score a few more. Austin Wobrock hit a run-scoring single and Andrew Heck hit a two-run double.

The ThunderBolts did not have a baserunner after Gallagher’s double in the sixth inning as the final 12 men were retired by Luke Wilkins. Wilkins went the distance and struck out a season-high nine batters.

The ThunderBolts were led offensively in the game by Gallagher, who hit two doubles and Ryan Deitrich, who also had two hits.

Wilkins (8-5) pitched his fourth complete game of the year in the win and Brady Muller (0-1) took the loss in the first start of his career. He allowed three runs in four innings with five strikeouts.

The loss wraps up the 2015 season for the ThunderBolts, who dropped the season finale for just the second time since 2006. They finished with a record of 41-55. During the offseason, all ThunderBolts information, including the release of the 2016 schedule, can be found at www.wcthunderbolts.com.
