ThunderBolts take opener from Joliet

Bolts 3 Slammers 2

CRESTWOOD, IL – Jake Fisher retired 14 of the first 15 batters he faced Friday night on his way to a 3-2 win over the Joliet Slammers in the series opener at Standard Bank Stadium.

Max White gave the ThunderBolts (38-50) a lead they would not relinquish in the first inning. After Austin Gallagher’s hit had him on base with two outs, White launched his 12th home run of the year to put the Bolts in front 2-0.

Windy City did not get another baserunner until the fifth inning but Joliet (37-51) had the same problem. Following a Mike Garza double in the first, Fisher set down 12 straight Slammers.

They finally got their bats going in the sixth, scoring their first run. Mason Snyder and Alfredo Rodriguez singled in front of a Garza sacrifice fly.

The Bolts got that run right back as White, who had reached on a fielder’s choice, scored in the bottom of the sixth on a Ransom LaLonde single that extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

Fisher remained in the game into the eighth but ran into trouble with two outs. Following a walk, he allowed back-to-back singles, including an RBI to Garza. Joel Lima came out of the bullpen with the tying run at third and struck out Jeremy Nowak.

Lima allowed two hits in the ninth but no runs as he picked up his seventh save.

Fisher (5-6) pitched 7.2 innings, giving up two runs for the win while David Kubiak (6-6) gave up three runs in six innings for the loss.

The ThunderBolts continue their final home series of the year with the Slammers on Saturday. Austin Wright (5-10, 4.22) will be the ThunderBolts starter against Joliet’s Michael Carden (3-5, 4.28). After the game, the entire ThunderBolts team will participate in the Ice Bucket Challenge in support of ALS research followed by the Super Mega Fireworks Spectacular. First pitch from Standard Bank Stadium is scheduled for 6:05 and the broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
